There’s no better way to delight in the glorious rays of sunshine than by lounging on quality, comfortable outdoor furniture. However, the endless options available for upgrading or refurbishing your outdoor areas can be overwhelming.

Purchasing the appropriate outdoor furniture is, in some ways, similar to buying indoor furniture. However, the outdoor environment comes with special considerations. So, it is essential to take the time to research all-weather furniture styles and materials. Likewise, you must consider durability, materials, comfort, and basic features like size and price.

Here at Special Build, we have created a simple and short guide on what you should know before buying materials for outdoor metal furniture. Let’s delve into them to clarify your options and make the most of your potential installation location.

Figure Out Your Reason for Buying an Outdoor Furniture

Before choosing long-lasting furniture and consulting metal sculpture manufacturers, get to the bottom of what you’re looking for in outdoor furniture.

Ask upfront questions like: Are you planning to have a cooking area to entertain your guests during parties? Perhaps you’re looking for a piece of furniture to relax on by your pool area or porch, like an outdoor settee? Is there enough space in your yard for new furniture? Most importantly, will your furniture be permanently placed, or do you want it to move around?

All these and more are essential questions you must answer before deciding on the style and materials for your bespoke metal furniture.

Allocate a Budget

Your budget will determine what you can buy, so it’s wise to set aside a budget for a product you can afford. Don’t assume something is reliable and durable just because it is cheap.

The lesson here is not to automatically settle for the lowest price because quality furniture offers more value than cheap items.

And if you’re looking to save money, you can consult the metal fabricators you’re working with. A trusted supplier will offer you options to ensure you still get the best value for your money. You can consider less expensive but still durable materials, like aluminium or heavy-duty resin or less-costly woods.

Decide on What Material to Buy

Perhaps, you’re already familiar with wrought iron furniture that became popular in the ’60s due to its malleable properties and a strong constitution. However, wrought iron can be heavy, corrosion-prone, and requires high maintenance.

You can pick one of the most popular metals: aluminium and stainless steel.

Aluminium is cost-efficient because it requires low maintenance and is not prone to rust or corrosion. Metal specialists can also extrude or cast it in any shape and size. On the other hand, stainless steel has all the benefits of aluminium and will be fine in the salty air.

Unfortunately, all metals will be vulnerable to chlorine, so it’s wise to keep your metal furniture away from the pool.

Alternatively, you can always discuss whether you want synthetics, glass, fabric, concrete, or other metal materials with your hired fabricators to customise your sturdy choice of outdoor furniture.

Consider the Weather in Your Location

Is your weather hot or dry, or maybe you live near the coast? Also, does it rain often? Maybe the midday sun beats down on your outdoor space.

Considering the weather in your location is vital because outdoor exposure will be hard on all furniture, regardless of the climate. Plus, there may be harsh external conditions that will contribute to your furniture’s deterioration.

For example, hot, dry conditions will splinter or crack wood furniture, and frequent moisture causes wood to rot. In addition to dulling and discolouring paint, the sun can bleach fabrics and wood and degrade synthetic materials. Likewise, strong winds may send aluminium furniture flying, while iron can’t stand up to salty air.

The bottom line is to think ahead of how your furniture will look in the years to come, say, 10 to 20 years down the road.

Determine Where You Plan to Install the Furniture

It is important to identify where you’ll place the furniture. Will it rest on soft ground and grass or a hard surface, such as a deck or paved patio? Additionally, pay attention to the overhead space to determine what may fall onto your furniture. Does the spot get a lot of sunshine or birds? Or perhaps there’s a fruit-bearing tree that may cause stain?

Either you need to plan how to protect your furniture or find a different place to relocate it.

Determining the installation location will also help you select the suitable materials that complement your environment.

For example, we don’t recommend placing soft wood on a grassy surface, as the moisture from the ground can likely rot the wood. For other metals, moisture on a grassy surface or exposed area can cause them to corrode.

Remember that just because you find the product in the outdoor furniture section doesn’t mean it’s the right furniture for your surroundings and climate.

Furthermore, while trying to figure out where to put the furniture, make sure you have enough space to store it during the winter and rainy seasons, or at least make room for pillows and other fabric items. This is especially true for materials needing a high level of protection, like wicker.

However, if you have limited storage space, you can opt for furniture that folds flat.

You can also ask the manufacturer if the furniture’s joint frames have full circumferential welds to repel moisture.

Learn the Factors to Consider for Your Outdoor Materials

Outdoor furniture is designed to last for years or even decades. You must plan the installation location, how to purchase it, and the time and effort it will require you to maintain it.

Some crucial factors to consider when buying furniture are the following:

Rain and moisture

Mould, rot, and mildew

Rust and corrosion

Warping

Fading

Maintenance level

Cracking

High temperature

Eco-friendliness

Durability

Keep in mind that excellent and long-lasting aesthetic and functionality will also rely on how you clean and take care of your outdoor furniture. For tips and tricks on ensuring your metal furniture lasts for decades, consult your hired metal experts.

Metal is widely used in different sectors, especially in the construction and design industries. The trend of hanging outdoor metal wall art in Sydney, for example, is adopted by many to enhance and liven up an otherwise plain wall, regardless of the size of the surface.

Metals can add a modern rustic look to a wall surface, perfectly blending in with any colour scheme. They can also fit any residential, commercial, industrial, or community project application.

In this article, we’re going to explore the decorative benefits of outdoor metal wall art in Sydney. Read more about this and some common types of metal art décor.

What Is Metal Wall Art?

Metal products are used for multiple artistic purposes, from creating metal panels for outdoor sculpture installation to building stunning outdoor park benches and installing heavy-duty bus shelters. In fact, decorators and builders use various metal products for furniture, decorative hardware, ironmongery, and wall art, among others.

Metal wall art is the most durable and luxurious art that combines and features the aesthetic and functionality of metal products. It is composed of durable and stylish metal panels attached directly to the outside walls, requiring minimal maintenance.

Metal wall art can be customised according to the customers’ needs and preferences.

Decorative Benefits of Outdoor Metal Wall Art

Many builders, architects, and decorators install outdoor metal wall art in Sydney to level up the look of any outdoor space, whether it’s a yard, walls of establishments, or a garden. The features and characteristics of such a type of wall art can add dimension and texture to the exterior space and offer other decorative benefits, such as:

1. It brings life to an otherwise dull and dark wall.

It doesn’t always do wonders if you try to make the best out of a barren wall using paints. Most decorators and designers use other decorative elements to brighten a dull wall, specifically metal wall art.

Adding metal wall art creates a focal point of attraction, bringing life and character to a wall.

You can also ask for various designs, sizes, and colours from your chosen manufacturer of outdoor metal wall art in Sydney that will fit your outdoor area’s requirements to add a distinctive spin.

2. It is versatile and durable.

Another decorative benefit of metal wall art is that it’s versatile and durable because of the composition of base materials and the finishing process.

As repeatedly stated, metal wall art can be customised, so customers can experiment with multiple designs to see if the final product will suit their space and theme. Different parts of the products can be modified as per the needs of the place, so versatility is guaranteed.

However, if you wish to install metal wall art décor outside, consider protecting it from various environmental elements, like snow, rain, direct sunlight, and even high humidity. Damaging elements like these can reduce the lifespan of your metal wall art décor.

3. It is easy to hang.

Manufacturers often leave gaps, openings, and hooks that come with a particular design for metal wall art. Therefore, it can be easily mounted using nails, pins, and screws wherever it is most convenient. You can also install it elsewhere if you’re unsatisfied with its initial placement.

Most metal wall art doesn’t follow the traditional rectangular format, opting for a striking shape with some distinctive features. You can play around with its orientation to create your desired effect.

4. It adds elegance and creates a modern vibe.

Elegant materials with multiple layers of polish make up metal wall art. With this type of art, you can add extra class and build an aesthetic vibe to an outdoor space. Customers can choose materials with a matte or glossy finish to bring the feeling of sophistication to a wall.

Furthermore, you can collaborate with fabricators on what aesthetic theme best conveys that elegant vibe during outdoor metal art’s manufacturing and design process.

You should be hands-on in working with your metal wall art designer to improve the design and decoration of the outdoor space.

Types of Metal Art Décor

You can’t imagine how many cool things sturdy metal products can produce, whether you want to beautify your garden wall or fence or highlight an entertaining area.

You can choose outdoor metal animal wall art, which is easy to install and doesn’t require much mounting. You can easily hang the panels on the wall with the help of one nail per piece.

Another metal wall art décor type is outdoor metal flower sculptures typically installed in pathways on entrances. It can drastically add charm to your entrance without overcrowding the space.

Other establishments and agencies also opt for installing exterior metal art sculptures, which are fabricated to give a sharp finish look. They are one-of-a-kind outdoor decor made from premium metal products that can be used both inside and outside. Some customers also install them to enhance the beauty of garden space.

Another option would be metal flower wall art, popular because it offers a highly soothing effect on a viewer’s eyes.

Final Thoughts

Many manufacturers supply outdoor metal wall art in Sydney with a wide array of designs and patterns to meet the renewed interest of decorators, builders, and establishment owners.

Also, remember that it is essential to invest in wall art that fits well with your wall and outdoor décor. Even with basic knowledge, make sure that you check the size of the metal panel, how huge it may look when mounted on your wall, or whether you need to invest in bigger or smaller wall art or not.

For outdoor metal wall art projects, you can always contact your metal fabricator if you don’t have much experience.

Metal fabrication workshops offer sheet metal punching services to customise various metal products. Among the sectors relying on this service are farming, aerospace, energy, construction, automobile, architecture, railroad, electronics, and several others.

After taking a quick look at sheet metal basics, let’s learn more about the benefits of sheet metal punching and the processes involved through this article.

Sheet Metal: What You Need to Know

Metalwork is said to trace its way back to 10,000 to 4,500 BCE, with copper being the first metal discovered. The Bronze and Iron Ages even attributed their breakthroughs to the discovery of metal, which prehistoric individuals widely took advantage of. They used it for forging tools and weapons. In the present era, structural steel fabrication continuously evolves and aids metal processes for various sectors, including sheet metal fabrication.

Sheet metal is a fundamental component in metalwork. It refers to various metal types formed into flat or coiled, uniform workpieces in assorted sizes and chemical assemblies. Sheet metal fabricators shear, punch, roll, bend, and shape these materials to produce numerous items and meet varying project requirements. And unlike base metal, sheet metal is more durable and has higher tensile strength, making it suitable for construction and machinery equipment.

Some of the most common metals used today are cold rolled steel, mild steel, tin, galvanised steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and copper.

Meanwhile, sheet metal thickness varies from 0.55 up to 6 mm. The type that exceeds this range is called “metal plate.” The measurement units used to categorise its thickness include gauges, millimetres, and mils. A larger measurement is equivalent to a thinner metal.

Sheet metal is widely used for structural and aesthetic purposes. Its application will also vary based on the metal type since it dictates what a sheet is used for. When we care to observe our surroundings, we will realise that numerous fabricated metal sheets are literally everywhere, from small to large items.

Sheet Metal Production

Sheet metal is produced in two ways—hot rolling and cold rolling. The processes are dependent on the mill production, not on the product grade. Here are the primary differences:

Hot-rolled sheet metal. This sheet metal production generates roll-pressed sheet metal through an extremely high temperature (over 1700° F)—above recrystallisation for most steel. This process also makes steel easier to form. In addition, it is cheaper than cold-rolled sheet metal because it is quicker, avoiding potential delays in the milling process. Moreover, reheating is not required.

Cold-rolled sheet metal. This is another sheet metal production method, essentially a hot-rolled sheet metal that underwent further processing. Once the material has cooled, it is re-rolled at room temperature. This is done to achieve more precise proportions and achieve higher surface quality. Afterwards, an annealing or temper metal rolling is done.

Sheet Metal Cutting Operations

Experts categorise sheet metal cutting operations into forming and cutting processes.

Cutting operations: This involves stressing the metal sheet’s ultimate strength, thus breaking its structure. The following are some of them:

Shearing

Blanking

Slotting

Piercing

Perforating

Slotting

Notching

Forming operations: This is the process of distorting metal parts by causing stress below the sheet metal’s ultimate strength. The following are under this process:

Bending

Ironing

Curling

Hydroforming

Laser cutting

Punching

The subsequent discussions will focus on the last type of metal forming operation—sheet metal punching.

Sheet Metal Punching

Back then, sheet metal shops perform the sheet metal punching process manually. With the technological advancements today comes automated punching machines, allowing faster operations and more precise results for fabricators and manufacturers.

Sheet metal punching is a common metal cutting procedure sought by several industries since it is a cheap alternative to laser cutting. This involves the application of sufficient shearing force to remove material. But how does this fabrication process work?

How It Works

Most metal workshops use a CNC (computer numerically controlled) punching press machine to generate various customised holes and specially designed shapes. Regardless of whether you use a machine-assisted or manual technique, the entire process is straightforward:

The sheet metal or workpiece, made of hardened metal, is inserted between the machine’s punch and die tools. The die is located underneath the material while the punch is placed over it. The die supports the sheet and cuts the workpiece to achieve the desired forms.

The punch moves downward with extreme force, hitting the workpiece and the die.

Afterwards, metal scraps (also referred to as plug) are removed from the material. These are often recycled into a container.

The metal workpiece is left with a hole or shape desired.

Sheet Metal Punching Advantages

The following are the benefits that various fabrication and manufacturing industries get from sheet metal punching services:

Metal punching is cost-effective. The metal punching cost is relatively low compared to other punching processes. With sheet metal punching, fabricators find it quick to combine dies. They have to complement a specific mould, allowing their customers to save more. This is in addition to the requirements—whether simple or intricate—being met.

Metal punching is flexible. Fabricators consider this as their go-to punching technique because it is versatile. It can handle just about any material type, from aluminium to galvanised steel and more.

Metal punching guarantees speed and accuracy. Modern machinery makes the metal punching process quick and easy, ensuring efficient results and reducing the labour required from fabricators and manufacturers. It also allows them to achieve a high production level since they can create more parts in a short period. It is easier to set up and more reliable than traditional punching techniques. Moreover, this is ideal for workshops catering to several orders from different clients.

Metal punching scraps are recyclable. Conventional machines produce a vast amount of scrap material, while modern sheet metal punching machines generate lower scrap volume. This is also because of its versatile characteristics that help modify vast metal types. Plus, the shed material can be recycled, again depending on the material scrap type.

Metal punching yields precise results. Summing up their beneficial features, sheet metal punching machines increase the production of precise items in a single operation. Not only is this economical, but it exceeds or meets customers’ desired results. Depending on the residential or project requirements, it can cater to several material specifications.

Numerous steel shops offer CNC laser cutting services because they are less costly and use less energy compared to other cutting methods.

For this article, let us discuss the differences between laser cutting and CNC laser cutting (as sometimes they are used interchangeably), how CNC laser cutting works, and the benefits it offers to multiple industrial and engineering-related fields.

Terminologies

Before we jump to the main discussion, a quick refresher on the common terminologies is in order to help you better understand CNC laser cutting services:

Laser. This light source stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It produces a narrow light beam with light waves having similar wavelengths. Laser beams can travel long distances. In laser cutting, enough energy is put into the laser beam before it escapes from the container, slicing through a targeted material.

CNC. This stands for Computer Numerical Control. This is an automated control machine used for several industrial and manufacturing processes to produce intricate design and cut results. The programs fed into the CNC machine dictate the movement of the machinery or tool. This makes it more distinguishable from other computation forms (it has consoles and programs).

CAD. Computer-Aided Design is a software program widely utilised by various engineers, architects, and constructors as an alternative to manual drafting to improve and modify the design qualities. Through CAD, industries can look through several prototype facets in the designing process to ensure that they are relevant, accurate, and efficient. In addition, this software lessens raw material waste since manufacturers can see the cutting patterns even before the actual process happens.

Tolerance. This is the ideal variation number of products for the cutting process. Tight tolerances heavily depend on material type, thickness, and method (water jet cutting service, fibre laser, or CO2 laser). This is critical to fit in smaller custom parts and achieve efficient cutting or designing results.

Focal point. This refers to the distance between the workpiece surface and the laser focus. A focal point is crucial to ensure that the maximised energy produced by the tube reaches the workpiece. If this is not adjusted correctly (set too high or too low), the density put into the workpiece decreases.

Gas jet. This is also called assist gas. During the laser cutting process, some materials are removed, creating kerfs. Gas jet effectively thins the molten layer, removes material debris, and reduces the amount of laser beam energy.

Thermal conductivity. This is the material’s ability to conduct or transfer heat energy. A lower heat transfer rate occurs in materials with a lower thermal conductivity than those with a higher thermal conductivity (e.g., metals). Metal’s increased temperature is mainly due to free electrons, while for non-metals, it is due to lattice vibrations.

Difference between CNC laser cutting and laser cutting

Few people directly integrate laser cutting with CNC laser cutting. Both processes are ideally used to achieve precise cutting results and are widely popular in the industrial industry—that much is true. To make it more comprehensive, we will briefly discuss the distinct features that set the two related processes apart.

CNC is more old-fashioned than laser cutting. CNC requires physical contact of an automated machine with the workpiece, using a CNC router to slice through the material. Meanwhile, laser cutting uses a laser beam to cut the material with the support of fibre optics (with no contact required). To simplify it: CNC cutting is done through friction, while laser cutting is achieved through noncontact-based heat.

Laser cutting is more popular among huge industries, and it is more costly. The price difference is due to the energy required to carry out each process. Laser cutting has high energy consumption, while CNC cutting only uses a minimum power supply.

CNC Laser Cutting Process

The three main types of laser cutter are flying optic, moving material, and hybrid laser cutting. Meanwhile, the processing of the CNC cutters ranges from 0.3mm up to 25mm. They can slice through various materials—including stainless steel, mild steel, copper, brass, and pre-galvanised steel, among others.

The core of the entire CNC laser cutting process is the computer numerical control machine, also called “soft-wired” NC. CNC laser cutting uses optics, gas jets, and system guidance to control and focus the laser beam into the targeted piece. This machine involves running a computer which programmers use to feed instructions, dependent on the cutting project requirements. The CNC machine conducts the entire cutting process, from prototyping to finalising the dimensions.

In CNC laser cutting services, fabricators carry out the process by letting customers see the design prototypes (either a 2D or 3D illustration) first through CAD software (AutoCAD for others). And as mentioned earlier, this software is helpful to see and adjust proper dimension and configuration.

Once the experts are done with the software work, they input codes and program instructions into the CNC machine. The program also controls the CNC speed, movement, and focus point. Afterwards, operators merely set up the CNC machine and check the motor and drive components to ensure it functions properly.

Once all these are done, the CNC machine performs the designing process efficiently with little to no errors. Besides, this machine was invented to meet the accuracy requirements.

CNC Laser Cutting Benefits

Although it is more in-demand among small enterprises, it still holds true that CNC laser cutting is sought-after by industries that seek efficient yet cost-effective cutting solutions. Here are other benefits it contributes to various industrial and manufacturing sectors:

Time-saving. Compared to traditional methods, this process requires less work from the operators since they merely send codes and programs into the CNC machine through the computer.
The machine also requires less monitoring. It can even function all day; you only need to supply the instructions, codes, and raw materials. Additionally, it does not require removal since you can leave it to pick up on its next task easily. Plus, the machine conducts the entire cutting process!

Cost-effective. CNC laser cutting is less expensive than laser cutting and other cutting methods, and it can produce precise and clean-cut customised shapes and designs. The extremely high-quality results delivered make it ideal for performing repetitive tasks.

Energy-efficient. As mentioned above, a CNC machine requires less energy than laser cutting and other cutting methods in conducting the cutting process. The generated heat by spindles and motors is regulated with CNC machining, which also helps you save. With less energy, the machine functions at peak performance.

Flexible. A CNC cutting machine creates diagonal, curved, or straight-line cuts quickly and accurately, making it a popular alternative for traditional cutting methods. In addition, it can cater to the needs of a wide variety of materials. So, it saves you time and money and saves you the trouble of finding other cutting techniques ideal for your ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

In achieving overall high-quality Sheet Metal Laser Cutting results, speed and efficiency-wise, people now prefer modern cutting processes over traditional cutting methods, such as sawing, drilling, turning, or milling. Aside from this, the advanced techniques come with low costs, unique shapes and precise design results, as well as a small kerf width.

And one of these in-demand cutting techniques used by various steel and home workshops is sheet metal laser cutting. This is a thermal fabrication method of cutting sheet parts through a great force generated by a laser beam.

And no matter how effective the cutting process is, there are inevitable factors that contribute to specific issues it will encounter. This article will discuss some common problems with common solutions in laser cutting to guarantee customers first-rate results.

Sheet Metal Laser Cutting: Background

In 1965, fabricators used a laser cutter to drill diamond dies holes. Two years later, Western Electric Engineering Research Center launched the first laser-assisted oxygen jet cutter specifically made for metals. This was widely used in the aerospace industry, especially for cutting titanium. Its precision is due to the sheet metal laser cutter.

Along with this is a CO2 laser cutter invention. However, it was not ideal for cutting rigid materials, like alloys and metals, only for non-metals (such as textiles).

Sheet metal laser cutting, from the name itself, uses a high-powered “laser” to cut through a variety of materials, unlike other cutting methods that use blades. When the laser beam is correctly positioned to the desired material surface to cut, it strikes the part, cutting it efficiently.

A sheet laser device can cut through ferrous and non-ferrous materials, such as carbon steel, aluminium, zinc, and tool steel. It can also cut 3D materials, like profiles and tubes. The machine consists of the following components: power supply, laser source, focusing lens, mirrors, nozzle, pressurised gas, and a workpiece table.

How Does a Laser Cutting Machine Work?

Laser beams can create cuts and incisions. But for them to achieve speed, accuracy, and efficient results, laser power and material thickness will have a role to play. Normally, the laser type used for the cutting process is CO2 based, with around 1,000 to 2,000 power watts. As for materials that require a high-powered laser—like aluminium and copper alloys—manufacturers use Nd and Nd-YAG lasers.

The process starts with generating a laser beam through a stimulated lasing material. The stimulation is done through several electrical discharges within a container. A partial mirror causes the beam to be reflected during this process until it gains sufficient energy. This high-energy beam then escapes as monochromatic coherent light.

Through several mirrors (fibre optics) and the cutting head, the beam is directed, with precise focal length, at the targeted piece to cut. Some shops conduct the process while the workpiece moves while the cutting head remains stationary. For others, it is the opposite. Regardless of the system used, the laser beam still efficiently etches intricate shapes and bores tiny holes in the material.

Additionally, pressurised gas either eliminates, burns, or melts the molten metal parts during the cutting process. This jet gas leaves a top-quality cut edge, with little to no burrs.

Common Laser Cutting Issues and Ways to Address Them

A machine is like a human being; even with its top-quality performance unmatched with manual strength, it sometimes goes through errors. If not addressed immediately, this can highly affect your laser cutting machine, resulting in substandard cutting results.

Some of the factors that contribute to these issues are the following:

Cutting speed

Sheet type

Heat elements

Lens contamination

Gas pressure

Nozzle quality

Focus position

Machine handling

Lack of maintenance

Below are the common issues associated with sheet metal laser cutting:

Edge burrs

The ideal cutting result fabricators aim during a laser cutting method is always a material’s burr-free edge. However, there are times that burrs remain. The molten metal that quickly solidifies before it is properly melted or eliminated causes these burrs. The laser focus position, insufficient output power, or unstable guide movement are some of the known reasons for burrs, too.

Tip: First, the operators must be knowledgeable about the interaction of the cutting beam, pressurised assist gas, and workpiece. The technicians (for modern systems, the machine itself) must adjust the cutting parameters or determine the beam’s focal point. Another way to avoid the issue is completely restarting the device.

Deformed shape and uneven edges

Another issue in laser cutting is the deformed cut metal produced after the cutting process. The uneven cutting mostly happens to carbon steel. Some possible factors that result in these cutting results are the raw materials’ reflective and metal properties. This likely happens to thin metal plates cut with excessive heating. Additionally, less cutting area or focal point error may also contribute to the issue.

Tip: The fabricator should recheck if the laser cutting machine is set correctly. This can also be avoided by controlling the ideal heating requirements for that specific material based on its thickness. Also, remember that tiny shapes will require speeding up the laser. This will help prevent deformities in form and a thermal runaway or blowout.

To avoid burning, use gas-assisted technology. In addition, ensure that the distance between the main shaft’s centre and the main shaft on the ground is minimised to regulate the heat properly. Lastly, improve your machine’s lathe unit (used for shaping the material).

The laser will not cut through the material

An insufficient cutting depth on the material is mainly caused by poor machine maintenance or improper machine handling. Additionally, it also happens due to reduced laser power, ageing lamp tube, damaged focusing lens, and unstable voltage.

Tip: To avoid this, you should adjust the focal point of the machine and the depth, recheck output power, or slow down the engraving speed. The latter also holds true when using the soft puncture (or pulse perforation) instead of blasting perforation. We also provide Sheet Metal Engraving services to our valued client.

As for your focus lens, reflector, and fibre optics, ensure that they are free from any contamination. You should also replace the laser tube, heighten the voltage regulator, and increase the auxiliary gas pressure.

Defective machine components

Among the laser cutting problems, perhaps this is the most common, not to mention the root cause of all the issues discussed above. Your laser cutting equipment will encounter complications, especially with regular use. With these complications comes cutting inaccuracies—and naturally, unsatisfied clients.

Defective components mostly include instability of workpiece table, insufficient power output, broken origin switch and motor wire, loose screws, inaccurate laser tube connection—the list can go on.

Tip: Your machine is the core of your sheet metal laser cutting method. To ensure that it is operating at peak performance, make it a habit to conduct a weekly or daily checkup on its components. A minor malfunction can create destructive effects on your machine’s other parts.

In conclusion, since sheet metal laser cutting is a complex and sensitive method, achieving uniformity on your desired design and cut results is your goal. This is why, as a manufacturer or machine owner, you must address any issues encountered by the device to prevent significant consequences.

For a flexible cutting process that delivers superior quality results, water jet cutting has always been in demand among manufacturers.

Several equipment builders and fabricators offer a water jet cutting service for residential, commercial, or community projects. But how well-informed are you about water jet cutting? For in-depth learning, let us dive into the basics and the technical process of water jet cutting. What is it? How does it work? And how does it benefit the engineering industry?

Water jet cutting: the basics

Water jet cutting is a very efficient alternative to conventional cutting techniques. A water jet is a machine-driven device that produces detailed cutting results and is widely used in heat-sensitive materials. It can cut through any material type, ranging from soft kinds (e.g., wood, paper, rubber) to hard kinds (e.g., stainless steel, aluminium, stone, glass, titanium). However, it is not ideal for brittle materials, like tempered glass and other ceramic types.

Water is the main medium used for softer materials, while for hard metals, an abrasive is put into the water stream. The latter can cut steel from 0.5 to 170mm thick.

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) is the machine core of the process. It runs G-code to position the jet nozzle, thus increasing accuracy. Standard cutting pressure goes from 50,000 to 60,000 psi, whereas modern systems can pressurise up to 90,000 psi.

Water jet cutting: how it works

The water jet device uses energy from ultra-high water pressure. A pump pressurises the water of up to several thousand psi by feeding it into a heavyweight intensifier. The force required for the cutting system ranges from 1,000 to 6,000 bars, and an ideal pump type for cutting tough materials is an intensifier pump (up to 94,000 psi).

The pressuring pump fires the pressurised water to a mixing chamber. Then, the water jets go into a steel pipe to a cutting head. Afterwards, these are transported through a ruby or diamond orifice, which then directs the jets into a needle. The water is fired through the chamber, where abrasive sand is already hauled in the water stream.

Lastly, the water-abrasive mixture (or water alone, depending on the targeted material to cut) goes into the cutting head through the focusing tube. When the water is fired from the nozzle, it creates a speed three times that of sound, increasing its destructive force and resulting in the highest cutting precision results.

Water jet cutting: background

Craftsmen may have repeatedly modified the water cutting technology over the years. Waterjet devices could barely cut through hard materials during the early decades. What few people did not know is that it originated way back in the 1800s.

The 1850s witnessed the birth of water jet cutting service when New Zealand and Russia used them for coal mine excavation. California then adapted the service and used it in finding gold beneath rocks. During this time, the pressure obtained was only up to 800 psi.

With the fast-evolving industrial industry, more materials have been developed and embedded into the device, thus increasing the pressure. In fact, in the 20th century, manufacturers reached 1,600 psi. Then, OMAX Corporation developed the first reliable ultra-high-pressure pump in 1970.

Over the last 40 years, the cutting method has improved a lot, making it a precise and versatile cutting technique, still in demand until today.

Water jet cutting: accuracy

The cutting precision of a water jet device reaches ≥±0.05 (mm). The accuracy and precision level will also depend on several factors, including the material type (especially its thickness), the condition of the water jet machine, and the temperature.

To achieve each part’s tolerance, steel shops should check the originality of the spare parts used on the device, nozzle clearance, machine condition, abrasive type, among others. Moreover, to ensure a safe and efficient cutting procedure, a vital component is a skilled machine operator.

The operator must be a pro in inspecting the material fixture and the adjustments made for stability during the cutting method. A water jet machine can be troublesome for operators, so a rookie is not ideal. This is also to avoid troubleshooting delays.

Steel manufacturers and fabricators select the best machine parts and modern systems, along with an expert operator, to deliver accurate and consistent cutting results.

Water jet cutting: types

The following are the two main types of water jet cutting:

Pump water jet. The pump water jet has been widely used, since the 1970s, to cut through soft materials, like a cardboard box, disposable diaper, or tissue. This standard water jet cutting type uses a very thin water stream with sufficient pressurised water to produce a clean cutting result. Compared to an abrasive jet, this has a low cutting force.

Abrasive water jet. The abrasive jet was developed based on a pure water jet system and had an extremely high cutting ability compared to a pump water jet. The water fed into the nozzle is mixed with an abrasive, like a garnet. The mixture makes it ideal for cutting thick materials, like steel, titanium, glass, stone, etc.

Water jet cutting: benefits

Lastly, here are some of the advantages you can get out of a water jet cutting service:

Environment friendly. The water jet device will not produce a high level of hazardous waste to the environment. You can also recycle scrap materials.

Versatile cutting for any material. This is worth repeating: whether the pressurised water is mixed with an abrasive or not, water jet cutting can handle any material that needs precise cutting.

Less heat produced. With water as its main ingredient, water jet cutting will not produce considerable heat around the areas cut. Therefore, it will not compromise the internal structure of the material. It can also help avoid major accidents caused by heat, such as fires and skin burns.

Guarantees accuracy and functionality. No matter how simple or intricate the cutting details are, a water jet device can cut them. It has high accuracy in producing smooth material edges. Plus, it doesn’t need a further finishing process. It will also ensure overall structural functionality.

Steel shops widely use structural steel to take their operations to a superior level. As a project owner or builder, familiarising steel types for steel fabrication is pretty helpful. With this, you will ensure that the steel grade fits your project requirements.

Suppliers produce several steel types for steel fabrication, and they categorise them into four to make it easy and convenient for builders and owners to pick.

This article focuses on the various steel types used in structural fabrication in Sydney. But before that, let us jump into the basics.

Basics of Steel

Steel’s core element is iron, mixed with carbon and other materials (small quantities of phosphorus, oxygen, and sulphur). It is next to cement, the most-produced material worldwide, with an approximate annual production of 750 million tonnes.

With steel greatly influencing our daily lives, it is difficult to imagine a world without it. We see steel used in almost every corner of the world: automobiles, bridges, towers, airports, cargo ships, and skyscrapers, among others. No wonder steel is the most in-demand alloy in the civilised world, especially in engineering.

Aside from wood, concrete, and masonry, manufacturers worldwide use metal—specifically steel—to ensure building safety and security. Moreover, steel is a versatile alloy type, subject to various codes and standards.

Some of the advantages of steel are listed below:

Steel is recyclable, hence environmentally friendly.

Steel emits less CO2.

Steel is reliable and affordable.

Steel is a versatile alloy used to produce several creative pieces.

Steel’s usage is widespread, from engineering to manufacturing projects.

Steel is used to make household appliances, contributing to our convenience.

Stell is lighter than other building materials.

Steel-based structures are fire-resistant.

Steel is not only for structural aesthetics but overall product functionality.

What Is Steel Fabrication?

Steel fabrication is a complex manufacturing process of bending, folding, cutting, and forming raw steel materials, machinery, and other components to create custom-designed products. Only fabrication specialists perform this to reduce waste disposal and ensure fewer errors in material designing. Some of the raw materials used are welding wire, castings, flat and expanded metal, aluminium, and copper.

Today, various metal shops are continuously transforming buildings using raw and recycled steel components. Through structural steel fabrication in Sydney, property owners save time and money. Structural steel fabrication is also in demand among other sectors, including construction, mining, and energy. Its main advantage is its quick fabrication process at a low cost, along with corrosion-resistant properties.

There are a lot of available types of steel due to its widespread use. So, steel suppliers choose to categorise them to ensure that they can cater well to the customers’ needs. Now, let’s focus on the various steel types used in structural steel fabrication in Sydney.

Steel Types for Steel Fabrication

More alloy variations resulted in the emergence of over 3,500 steel grades. Because of the large varieties, identifying the steel grade is more challenging for ordinary individuals to meet project requirements. The four categorised steel types are as follows:

Stainless steel

Most of us must’ve heard of stainless steel already. This is an in-demand steel type because it is versatile. Depending on the structural project requirements, it can be used to create various shapes and intricate designs.

Aside from its aesthetics, this type is highly used for projects with corrosion- or stain-resistant and durability requirements. With its quality, stainless steel is ideal for healthcare facilities and skyscrapers. Modern manufacturers add nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen elements to heighten their corrosion-resistant properties.

Stainless steel also contains chromium that forms an oxide film when the steel’s surface faces destructive conditions—hence protecting it. Compared to other materials, stainless steel’s resistance properties are much better. Moreover, it is divided into five types: austenitic, martensitic, ferritic, duplex, and precipitation hardening.

Carbon steel

Compared to stainless steel, carbon steel has a lower chromium percentage, thus the term “low-alloy” (its rust susceptibility is also higher). Carbon is a reliable steel type and has the highest contribution to the industrial revolution. Like any other steel type, carbon steel is ferrous (metals containing iron and steel).

Its distinct property is its high carbon content, contributing to most project requirements on steel hardness. This also makes it ideal for skyscrapers and bridges components. Its carbon content also makes carbon steel more advantageous because it is more durable.

This steel type is also in demand since it is more economical than other steel types. Aside from that, it is recyclable, making it environmentally friendly. Carbon steel is categorised into low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel.

Alloy steel

When metal and non-metal components (copper, vanadium, molybdenum, nickel, tungsten, chromium, and silicon) are mixed with carbon steel, they form alloy steel. These elements heighten an alloy steel’s hardness and wear-resistance properties. These properties make this steel type different from carbon steel.

Alloy steels are ideal for massive modern structures, such as airports, stadiums, bridges, and skyscrapers through steel skeletons. This steel type is in demand because it improves structural strength and decreases the overall weight of the said establishments, not to mention meeting their corrosion-resistance requirements. Aside from this, alloy steels forge small and flat products, too, including plates, strips, nails, and screws, among others.

Like other steel types, its high performance when structures face harsh conditions makes it in demand among modern builders and property owners. The main types of alloy steel are low-alloy steel and high-alloy steel.

Tool steel

Tool steel contains various carbon and alloys (including molybdenum, cobalt, tungsten, and vanadium), which increases heat-resistance and improves material durability. It is ideal for shaping and cutting tools, including lathes and drills. It is produced on small scales in controlled conditions in differing grades, depending on the edge temperature of the project requirements.

The qualities that make this steel type also in demand are its distinct toughness, cutting-edge ability, and abrasion-resistant. The tool steel groups are the following: water-hardening, cold-work, high-speed, shock-resisting, hot-work, and special purpose/plastic mould.

Being knowledgeable of steel types will help modern builders and owners keep up with the emerging competition in the business industry, particularly in the steel market. With your ample knowledge of the steel types, it’ll be easy to identify what steel grade meets your needs for intricate cuts and design details.
